In 2015, Davao City is expected to yield an additional 30,000 square meters (sqm) of office space intended for business process outsourcing (BPO) operations.
Samuel Matunog, President of ICT-Davao said the additional BPO space is driven by the entry of new IT parks in the city. These include Lanang Business Park, Matina IT Park, Felcris, and other office properties offered by SM Malls. At present, there are 7,500 sqm. of BPO space in the region.
Matunog predicted that the additional office space will produce about 9,000 jobs. He added that the occupancy rate will not be an issue since Davao is considered as an alternative hub to ensure business continuity strategies.
However, he noted that there is an outstanding issue on the lack of manpower for the IT outsourcing segment. He said the volume of graduates should be beefed up to resolve this issue. At present, Davao produces 20,000 graduates and 20,000 full-time employees in various BPO segments including IT. Matunog also said Davao is looking to fill 9,000 positions in the BPO sector in the next two years.
