The business process outsourcing (BPO) industry requires continuity in its operations. With the recent events in the Philippines, it was found that Davao is now being considered as a backup site for when a calamity strikes a major BPO hub.
According to Erriberto P. Barriga, Jr., Executive Vice-president of the Information and Communications Technology Association in Davao, the province is an ideal backup location for organizations that depend on redundant infrastructure facilities.
Barriga added that for cases where companies need to expand operations, the backup system can also serve as a feasible solution. He said after the recent earthquake in Cebu and Bohol, two companies asked if it would be possible for them to set up operations in Davao.
Meanwhile, a report from the Institute of Development and Econometric Analysis, a private organization based in the University of the Philippines, Quezon City, showed that only 35 percent of survey respondents have contingency plans, and only 10 percent stated that they have business recovery and continuity strategies.
