After three years when the creation of the Department of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) was first proposed, the stakeholders in Cebuís business process outsourcing (BPO) industry raised the said proposal to President Benigno Aquino III.
Cebu Education Development Foundation senior advisor Bonifacio Belen spoke on behalf of the BPO industry, saying that the creation of the Department of ICT would make government processes simple, reduce corruption, and ensure transparency. There is also a need for a national broadband network, and the new department would make it a priority. ďAt present, our telecommunication companies are only able to provide broadband Internet services to 66 percent of the whole country. Unlike in other countries like South Korea where all nooks already have at least 10 megabytes of broadband service. We need to also do that here especially that we have already started the automated voting,Ē said Bonifacio.
However, the President said the administration has yet to evaluate the proposal in terms of having many consultants and agencies that may be deemed redundant.
