Last Saturday, April 18, MS Volunteers visited I Love Street Children, a shelter for street families in Makati to mark the International Day for Street Children earlier this month. The non-profit organization is working hard to preserve the family unit by keeping families together while giving parents the opportunity to live responsible and dignified lives by providing for their family’s needs under the free roof of the shelter.
The visit was heartwarming and volunteers had a pleasant morning bonding with young children aged one month to 12 years. We began the morning with an entertaining magic act by our resident magician and keen volunteer Angelito Castro from MicroCreatives. The children absolutely loved this opening performance and were all marveled by the experience.
Kariktan Mingoa from Briston account read Halu-Halo Espesyal to the children while dressed in a beautiful handmade fairy costume. This costume was so popular with the girls and they all wanted to try it on with some young fairies requesting photographs. MicroMissions extends a special thank you to Karie who kindly donated this beautiful piece to the shelter.
The rest of the morning was spent creating edible Fruit Loops necklaces and bracelets with the help of the volunteers. After that, the children got the opportunity to color and volunteers took time to stick up the beautiful artwork on the walls. It was definitely an enjoyable morning of arts and crafts.
During our visit, it was heartbreaking to learn that most families living in the shelter had experienced unfortunate life-changing events that saw them lose everything they had and later succumb to homelessness. However, despite their setbacks, volunteers were touched by the warm welcome received from both the children and parents at the shelter. The children even extended an invitation to MS Volunteers to visit them again soon!
Staff at the shelter also expressed their deepest gratitude to MicroMissions for the donation of two 50kg sacks of rice. MicroMissions intends to continue strengthening this newly formed partnership with I Love Street Children and there are plans to support the organization’s Economic Livelihood Program. PR & Marketing will help I Love Street Children with the marketing of its handmade jewelry to create financial independence for the parents at the shelter who have no other source of income. As they regain their independence, they will be able to move out of the shelter to make way for other street families in need.
