In his speech during the recent IT-BPM summit, President Benigno Aquino III lauded Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary Manuel "Mar" Roxas II for the success of the IT-BPM (information technology and business process management) sector of the country. Roxas became Interior Secretary in 2012 after his term as the Secretary of Trade and Industry.
Pres. Aquino pointed out that during the early stages of IT-BPM in the country, the Philippines only employed a few thousand workers and posted annual revenues of a few million dollars. He also said no one took action in maximizing the benefits of the sector. The "turning point" led by Roxas fuelled the sector and resulted to success after success and growth. The IT-BPM sector has greatly evolved over the last 10 years, and sustains its bullish streak. He added that the partnership between public and private organizations, and the skilled, English-speaking workforce reinforced the country’s position in the global IT-BPM space.
Pres. Aquino also cited major IT-BPM milestones such as Manila taking the second spot in the 2014 Tholons Top 100 Outsourcing Destinations Report. Cebu, Davao, Sta Rosa, Bacolod, Iloilo, and Baguio were likewise included in the list. Also, the employee count of the sector hit the 1-million mark this year.
