According to Juanloz Botor, President of the Healthcare Information Management Outsourcing Association of the Philippines (HIMOAP), the sizeable workforce of the Philippines in the healthcare segment can help make it the next leader in the global healthcare outsourcing industry.
Moreover, he said the health information management (HIM) segment provides several employment opportunities for the oversupply of nearly 200,000 nurses in the country. They can carry out tasks such as medical transcription, data management, medical coding and billing, and pharmaceutical benefits management.
Meanwhile, Everest Group has reported that the Philippines produces 6,000 nurses a year, and has the largest pool of US-licensed nurses outside the US. Moreover, the nursing curriculum in the country is very similar to that of the US.
The report also stated that healthcare outsourcing contributed $102 million in 2010 to $430 million by end-2012, making it one of the fastest growing segments in BPO.
