In order to become a premier hub for business process outsourcing (BPO), the Philippines should create “Smart Cities” and “Smart Countrysides”, according to BPO industry members.
On the contrary, Tony Del Carmen, Chairman of the Laguna Industry Network for Knowledge, Innovation and Technology Foundation (LINK-IT,) said there are other issues that need to be addressed such as skills match of workers to the requirements of the industry, incentives for the local government, and promoting awareness among local real estate developers.
He reiterated that the main focus of creating Smarter Cities is to cultivate an environment that promotes Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for BPO firms. Moreover, of all the challenges in the ICT industry, Del Carmen cited talent development as the main issue.
Santa Rosa, Laguna is making a name for itself as the Silicon Valley (Detroit) of the Philippines as it is being developed as a smarter city. Firms in the semiconductor industry and car manufacturing organizations were seen developing in the Metro Laguna area.
In line with that, the National ICT Confederation of the Philippines (NICP) will launch a program on behalf of “Smarter City/Countryside” at the 5th NICP National ICT Summit on November 22-23 in Santa Rosa.
