The IP Seal campaign was launched in Cebu City as part of the anti-piracy campaign to increase awareness on intellectual property rights (IPR) protection. This initiative also aims to further improve the IT sector and boost the position of Cebu as a major outsourcing hub.
According to Nelia V. F. Navarro, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Cebu provincial director, IPR protection is crucial in improving the IT sector to attract more investors. "There’s a positive correlation between growth in trade and intellectual property rights protection. Investors want to go to countries where there are legal remedies when IP rights are infringed," Navarro said.
The IP Seal is given to businesses that support IPR protection efforts and use only licensed software. According to Numeriano Rodriguez, Jr., IP Coalition secretary-general, the IP Seal means that the business respects and adheres to the IPR laws of the country.
