As Sen. Benigno Aquino III maintains a wide lead from his closest rival in the presidential race, business groups in the Philippines have started expressing their support to the Aquino administration, and to the new leaders on the local level, GMAnews.tv reported.
"The business community welcomes who the people have chosen. We will work with whomever the people chose. We have to rally behind [Mr. Aquino]," said Francis Chua, president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI).
Meanwhile, Sergio R. Ortiz-Luis Jr., president of the Philippine Exporters Confederation, said that having a strong mandate will be more valuable than experience. The economy will not be a major concern, at least in the first year of the new administration.
The concern right now is how to encourage cooperation between the members of the executive branch and the leaders who are poised to constitute the legislative branch. "It is mixed right now. There is no clear showing that [Aquino] will have control over Congress. It will be a problem that will have to be faced by the new president, how to get cooperation," Ortiz-Luis said.
