David Kline, CIO of Discovery Communications, said companies should “clean” their IT infrastructure first through virtualization and consolidation before transferring it to a service provider.
"You could do an offshore … where your management staff is saying, 'It's over there. It's not my problem anymore.' And that's not true. IT's still your mess. Get it as clean as you can get it," Kline said in a keynote address at the Global Sourcing Forum and Expo. "Know yourself. Know your limitations. It is a huge proposition to do global sourcing."
Security credentials of the service providers must also be taken into account before the transfer of IT tasks. According to a VanDyke Software report, 61 percent of the IT professionals who took part in the survey said there was an intrusion in the IT systems that they outsourced within the past two years.
