According to Norio Usui, a senior country economist from the Asian Development Bank, the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector is not enough to keep the Philippine economy going. The country needs to strengthen the manufacturing and agricultural sectors to be at par with neighboring countries in Southeast Asia such as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand in terms of job production and revenues.
He said even if the booming BPO sector substantially contributes to the country’s economy, it is still inadequate in terms of providing job opportunities to a lot of unqualified Filipinos since it requires at least a college degree for most positions.
Usui also noted that amidst the great performance of the BPO industry, it is still way behind manufacturing, agricultural, and industrial sectors.
