Chairman Rajendra Singh Pawar of the National Association Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) and NIIT said it is indeed exciting for the Indian IT industry to hit $100 billion by the end of March this year. He also noted that the Indian IT industry is far from the $1 billion entity it was back in 1990.
With exports from information technology (IT) and IT-enabled services (ITES) industries accounting for 70 percent of the $100 billion figure, and their contribution to India’s GDP on a steady increase, the success of India now highly depends on the quality and capacity of the talent pool. Meanwhile, Mr. Pawar added that the IT-BPO industry is anticipated to hire 30 million candidates - five million of which are women and four million are applicants from rural areas.
The ITES sector is also at its peak this year for it is expected to make government services more accessible via the National e-governance plan (NeGP), Common Services Centers (CSC), State Data Centres (SDC), and State Wide Area Networks (SWAN). These services are said to be modelled after the water distribution system, with SWAN as the pipelines, CSC as taps, and SDC as the reservoir. This system, according to Mr. Pawar, helps companies streamline core processes like the UID project and 31 mission mode projects under NeGP.
As India competes in the IT services arena, lack of skilled candidates and the bottleneck in infrastructure hamper the country’s ability to succeed. Mr. Pawar said they are applying the necessary tools like ample bandwidth to power the projects.
